CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program designed to achieve an individual’s optimal fitness. Optimal fitness is achieved through “constantly varied, functional movement, performed at high intensity.” In short, this means we perform workouts that combine simple body-weight and free-weight movements, at varied intensities to improve fitness and overall health.
“Constantly Varied” means that every day brings a different workout (or “WOD”), that will challenge you to learn and grow. These workouts and exercises are specifically designed to work on various muscle groups and/or cardiovascular strength.
“Functional Movement” refers to maintaining the safest, most-efficient position to maximize power for any skill or movement. There are plenty of misconceptions out there about CrossFit; the truth is much of what we do in our workouts mirrors activities in our daily lives. To the uninformed, lifting a weighted object off the ground multiple times seems crazy. But if you’ve ever had to lift a box and carry it up a flight of stairs, or lift a child to your shoulder, you already know the importance of strength and balance to perform the task at hand. The skills you learn and perform in our classes will easily transfer into your everyday life and give you a sense of renewed freedom to move and perform without hesitation in fear of injury.
“High Intensity” is a concept that at first can be difficult for new CrossFitters to grasp. If you are used to long-distance running or spending hours on the elliptical, it might seem different to be in-and-out of the gym in an hour. At CrossFit West Springfield your workout may range from 8-25 minutes, but the outcome will show that intensity produces results. People come here skeptical that a high-intensity workout, done in a fraction of the time as they are used to, can lead to faster, better results. But results don’t lie.
